Can Medical Weight Management & Aesthetic Treatments Complement Each Other?

You finally hit your weight loss goal. Everyone says you look great. But when you catch yourself in the mirror, your cheeks look a bit hollow, and the skin on your neck or belly feels looser tthan you expected.

Have you noticed similar changes? You are not alone. Weight loss can change the appearance of your face and body, although not everyone develops noticeable loose skin or facial volume loss.

According to the November 2025 KFF survey of 1,350 US adults, 8% reported having taken a GLP-1 medication, while 12% were taking one at the time. As more people explore medical  medical weight loss programs in Indianapolis, it helps to understand the changes that may accompany weight loss and discuss any concerns with a physician.

Can Medical Weight Management and Aesthetic Treatments Work Together?

Yes, they can complement each other when appropriate. Medical weight management supports a healthier weight, but it does not directly restore lost facial volume or treat excess skin. Aesthetic treatments may help address those concerns.

You do not have to undergo both or purchase them as a package. However, discussing your goals early can help you understand your options if changes develop as you lose weight.

Why Does Weight Loss Change Your Face and Skin?

Fat beneath the skin helps support facial fullness. As you lose weight, some of that volume may decrease, and the skin may not fully adapt to the change.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) explains that rapid weight loss can reduce facial volume faster than the skin can retract. This may lead to hollow cheeks, sunken temples, more prominent smile lines, or the appearance of jowls.

These changes are often called “Ozempic face,” but they are not exclusive to tirzepatide  or semaglutide. Similar changes can occur after substantial weight loss through other medications, lifestyle changes, or weight loss surgery.

Age plays a part too. Skin with less collagen and elasticity may be more prone to sagging, while younger skin often adapts more readily. Your facial structure, skin quality, and the amount and pace of weight loss also influence the changes you may notice. IFor more information, read our article about what causes Ozempic face and how to avoid it.

Which Aesthetic Treatments Go Well With Medical Weight Loss?

The appropriate options depend on what has changed for you, whether that involves facial volume, skin laxity, or remaining pockets of fat

Dermal Fillers for Face Volume Loss

Dermal fillers may help restore fullness in selected areas affected by weight loss, such as the cheeks or temples. ASPS identifies fillers and fat transfer as options for addressing facial volume loss.

Collagen-stimulating injectables, such as Sculptra®, may also be considered to improve fullness gradually. The choice depends on your facial anatomy, skin quality, and treatment goals.

PDO Thread Lifts for Facial Sagging

A PDO thread lift uses dissolvable threads to provide a lift in selected patients with mild to moderate tissue sagging. Some patients combine threads with fillers to address both sagging and volume loss.

Thread lifts are not intended to remove significant excess skin, and suitability depends on the amount of sagging, tissue support, and skin quality.

Skin Tightening After Weight Loss

Energy-based treatments, including radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening and RF microneedling, may help improve skin laxity. These treatments differ in how they deliver energy and which concerns they address.

ASPS says that radiofrequency is effective for moderate skin loosening, such as in the neck area. Results develop gradually over weeks to months, and multiple sessions may be recommended.

Body Contouring

Weight loss doesn’t remove fat evenly. Non-surgical body contouring addresses stubborn spots, like under the chin, the arms, the belly or the thighs.

This is where weight loss, fat reduction and skin tightening may complement each other. If an area has both remaining fat and loose skin, the treatment plan should account for both. Additional fat reduction may not be appropriate when skin laxity is the main concern.

Facial rejuvenation and body treatments can be planned alongside medical weight management to support balanced, natural-looking results. Dermal fillers may help restore lost facial volume, while collagen-stimulating treatments may improve skin quality as part of a personalized approach to aging gracefully with non-surgical treatments.

When Should You Start Aesthetic Treatments?

Each situation is different, so discuss your concerns with your provider early. The following approach may be helpful:

  • Before starting: Take baseline photographs of your face and body, and discuss your expectations.
  • While losing weight: Monitor changes in facial volume and skin laxity. Selected collagen-stimulating treatments may be considered, depending on your needs and expected further weight loss.
  • Review your pace and nutrition: Follow your physician’s recommendations for weight loss, adequate protein, and hydration. These support overall health but do not guarantee that loose skin or facial volume loss will be prevented. ASPS recommends losing about one to two pounds a week so your skin can keep up. Protein and water help too.
  • As your weight stabilizes: Reassess your face and body before finalizing volume-restoring, lifting, or contouring treatments. Continued weight loss can change your treatment needs.

Losing 40 or more pounds does not automatically mean you need a facelift. The appropriate treatment depends on your age, skin elasticity, facial structure, the amount and pace of weight loss, and the degree of volume loss or loose skin.

Non-surgical treatments may help selected patients, while significant excess skin or deeper tissue sagging may warrant a surgical consultation.

What Should You Know Before Combining Them?

Let’s keep it real. A few things to think about:

  • The research is still young. ASPS says more studies are needed on how GLP-1 drugs affect collagen and elastin. A 2026 trial of a face cream in 29 adults showed improvements, but it was short and had no control group.
  • Results differ. Your age, skin quality and how much weight you lose all change what’s possible.
  • Non-surgical has limits. Very loose skin may need surgery.
  • Costs add up. KFF found that 56% of GLP-1 users find the drugs hard to afford, so it helps to plan your budget in stages.

Final Takeaway

Medical weight management and aesthetic treatments can complement each other with careful, individualized planning. One supports a healthier weight, while the other may help address concerns such as facial volume loss, loose skin, or remaining pockets of fat.

Not everyone needs aesthetic treatment after weight loss. The right approach depends on the changes you experience and what you want to address.

FAQs

Can I get aesthetic treatments while I’m on a medical weight loss program?

Some aesthetic treatments may be appropriate during medical weight loss, while others may be better planned once your weight has stabilized. For example, selected patients may begin collagen-stimulating treatments while losing weight and consider volume-restoring injections later. Your physician can assess your health, medications, expected further weight loss, and treatment goals to recommend suitable timing

What is Ozempic face?

“Ozempic face” is an informal term for facial hollowing and loose skin that some people notice after substantial or rapid weight loss. It is not a medical diagnosis and is not exclusive to Ozempic. Similar changes can occur with other weight loss methods.

Do dermal fillers help with face volume loss after weight loss?

Yes. Dermal fillers may help restore lost volume in areas such as the cheeks and temples and improve jawline contours in suitable patients. Results depend on the filler used, the amount and location of volume loss, and your facial structure. Your physician can assess which areas may benefit from treatment.

Does a thread lift work after weight loss?

A PDO thread lift may provide a temporary lift for selected patients with mild to moderate tissue sagging. It may be combined with fillers when volume loss is also present. Significant excess skin or deeper tissue sagging may require a different approach, including a surgical consultation.

How do I tighten skin after weight loss without surgery?

RF skin tightening and RF microneedling may improve selected cases of skin laxity. Results develop gradually, and multiple treatments may be recommended. Suitability depends on your skin quality, the treatment area, and the amount of loose skin. Significant excess skin may be better addressed surgically.
