Cellulite Reduction

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the lumpy, dimpled skin better known as “cottage cheese” or “orange peel,” that most often appears on the hips, thighs and buttocks. It is estimated that 90 percent of women – and 10 percent of men – will experience cellulite, no matter their weight, and most of those women will be looking for miracle cures to help improve the look of cellulite in time for swimsuit season.

Even supermodels have cellulite.

“I have cellulite. I admit it. But sometimes I just say, ‘Screw it, I am going to wear a bikini,” Crawford has said.

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite occurs when fat cells cause the connective tissue of the skin to separate, pushing those cells to the skin’s surface, but there are a variety of different reasons why this happens.

The connective tissue of the thighs, hips and buttocks are generally longer, thinner strands, and as fat cells increase in size and number, they push against the skin’s surface until the connective tissue separates, creating the lumpy skin known as cellulite.

There are certain risk factors associated with cellulite, including prolonged sitting and inactivity, which weakens that connective tissue, a reduction in estrogen during menopause, which reduces circulation and reduces the production of collagen, which keeps connective tissue more stretchy and pliable, and the consumption of too many carbs, which causes a condition known as hyperinsulinemia, which not only spurs the growth of existing fat cells, but triggers the production of new fat cells.

Men are less prone to developing cellulite because their fat cells are arranged differently.

There are four different stages of development of cellulite on what is known as the Nurnberger-Muller cellulite classification scale, including:

The Nurnberger-Muller cellulite classification scale

  • Stage 0: No cellulite
  • Stage 1: While skin remains smooth while standing, when sitting down, bumps and lumps appear
  • Stage 2: Skin is no longer simply lumpy when sitting, but the common orange peel or cottage cheese appearance occurs while sitting or standing.
  • Stage 3: Skin takes on an orange peel appearance while sitting or standing, and there are both raised and depressed areas of the skin, creating more noticeable textural issues.

Is cellulite treatable?

While there are numerous cellulite removal treatments on the market that claim to ease the appearance of cellulite, no cream, lotion or ointment is going to help ease the appearance of cellulite.

Certain diet plans, such as Atkins or the keto diet, both of which shift energy burning from glucose to fat, can cause fat cells to shrink, but in most cases, it takes serious treatment options to help smooth out trouble spots and restore your confidence at the beach.

Cellulite Reduction treatments:

  • Gradually smooth the skin’s surface, reducing the appearance of cellulite
  • Reshape and contour the area being treated, reducing the circumference of hips, buttocks and thighs by reducing the size of fat cells

Please consult body contouring expert to determine which the best cellulite treatment option for you.

The treatments include:

Radio frequency technology:

This FDA-approved treatment uses a non-surgical device that helps reduce fat in the body, tighten the skin and improve the quality of skin. There is no downtime following a procedure.

For example: BTL Exilis Elite– the radio frequency waves are used to heat the subcutaneous fat between fibrous strands. Fat cells die and the collagen in fibrous strands get heated, this leads to the body producing more collagen to repair the damage and tightening the skin and smoothening the skin.

There is no surgery, bleeding, anesthesia or pain. Exilis Elite can be used on any part of the body, including beneath the chin tackle sagging skin, the arms, thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen.

While the all these treatments does provide body contouring, it is not a weight-loss program, and it is designed for those who have a BMI of less than 30 who fall under stages 0 to 3 on the Nurnberger-Muller cellulite classification scale.

Cellulite treatment areas could be on the neck (under chin), arms, thighs, buttocks, flank and abdomen. Most patients see gradual and cumulative results throughout the treatment regime.

Infra-red:

VelaShape III is the only non-invasive body shaping product to combine four different technologies including infrared head, radio-frequency, mechanical tissue manipulation that acts as massage as well as a vacuum to help with body contouring.

This innovative treatment option  reduces cellulite, reshaping hips, thighs and buttocks for a more toned, shapely look, and boosts collagen so skin appears more toned and texturally, more youthful.

With the Vela Shape III, there is no pain, no anesthesia and no downtime following a procedure.

Ultra sound:

The Z-wave, attacks cellulite by using radial ultrasound pulse therapy that breaks up the fat cells causing the appearance of cellulite.

The treatment is non-invasive and painless, and again, there is no downtime following a procedure.

Local Injectables:

Sometimes, certain areas of the body – such as the deeper pockets of cellulite that are part of Stage 4 on the scale – require a more aggressive approach.

To address these areas, we inject L-Carnitine, compounded in one of the oldest pharmacies in country, which is known for its fat-burning abilities. This injectable can be used alone or mixed with phosphotidyl choline/sodium deoxycholate, another localized fat reduction option.

We recommend a series of three injects given two weeks apart for those receiving L-Carnitine alone, or once every two weeks for four weeks for those receiving a blend of both fat-burning injections.

At MD Medical Weight Loss, Wellness Center and Med Spa, we offer three different technologies that provide body contouring that can help improve the appearance of cellulite.
